Steward

Strategy response

Rip the strategy apart, then ship the fixes into the product surface.

This page is the public operating memo for the competitive response: what was weak, what changes, and which shipped surfaces now carry the new strategy.

The standard changed

Steward has to be demonstrably better than a free or already adopted substitute in the first session. That means packet proof before feature breadth.

Teardown

The wedge was scheduled too late

If the maintenance-history packet is the reason to switch, it cannot wait behind general app polish. It has to be the first proof buyers see.

Teardown

The enemy is a substitute stack

Spreadsheets, inbox search, QuickBooks, free CMMS tiers, and one-off AI workflows combine into a practical default.

Teardown

Named competitors matter

Category comparisons are useful, but buyers search actual names: MaintainX, Limble, Stessa, DoorLoop, Buildium, UpKeep, and Property Meld.

Teardown

AI extraction is not the moat

Invoice extraction is necessary. The moat is reviewable extraction plus asset history, reminder projection, and a packet a third party can trust.

Move the packet to the front

Problem: The prior roadmap treated the maintenance-history PDF like a W31 export instead of the core product proof.

Fix: Make the sample packet, starter packet, and real export path the activation surface from day one.

Shipped surface

Win named comparisons early

Problem: Category pages are safe, but buyers search named incumbents and substitutes.

Fix: Publish honest named comparisons for the tools buyers actually evaluate, while clearly saying what Steward does not replace.

Shipped surface

Beat spreadsheets in one sitting

Problem: A $10 spreadsheet wins if Steward asks for setup before showing value.

Fix: Reframe onboarding around a starter packet in 15 minutes from a small invoice batch.

Shipped surface

Treat QuickBooks as an ally

Problem: Accounting systems already own vendor spend and cannot be displaced casually.

Fix: Position Steward as maintenance memory beside accounting, not a replacement for accounting.

Shipped surface

Make AI reviewable, not magical

Problem: Generic AI extraction is not a moat, and overclaiming it will break trust.

Fix: Center the product on confidence, review, source documents, and reversible service records.

Coast adds owner-operator commercial property templates or a dedicated pricing tier.
Re-Leased publishes transparent pricing below 200 dollars per month.
MaintainX or UpKeep ships a commercial-property starter template.
Dext or QuickBooks adds asset-level maintenance coding and reminder projection.
DoorLoop, Buildium, or Stessa moves maintenance-history export into bottom-funnel messaging.
